Wind River Canyon

Probably one of the coolest natural things I have seen so far is the Wind River Canyon. This alone has made my choice in routes well worth it. I almost missed this gem when I got on US 26 by accident. I was about five miles out of Shoshone when I realized I would need to turn around. I contemplated just sticking with it and taking it to Jackson Hole Wyoming but a look at the map showed it was good 5 hour drive from my present course, and it was getting late. No worries back to Shoshone to correct my error.

Thank god I did, because this was the best choice route if ever. You enter the canyon through a series of caves/tunnels which almost sets the stage for a ride at Disney World! On the opposite side of the canyon ran train tracks, which twisted and turned in and out of tunnels, dodging giant boulders, as the river rages below it. It was an intense site to see. It was especially heightened by the still setting sun, casting an orange glow across the canyon walls. Then your blasting down the canyon full speed tapping the break ever so slightly to keep your vehicle manageable around the hairpin turns. Still, it was hard to keep my eyes fixed to the road with all this beauty around me.
